The rocky terrain offers you the possibility to explore the area in so many different ways, walking, climbing, swimming, by boat, well, the possibilities are endless. This area is also part of the Natura Reserve of the island (Natura 2000) and has a unique endemic fauna and flora species.

When you arrive to Ponta de São Lourenço, you see why this is one of the most searched and demanded walks of the island, the amazing views you have along the path over the north and south parts of the island are breathtaking, together with the harsh terrain and the hidden beaches it sets a scenario that you will not find in any other place in Madeira.

Hiking

Walking along the peninsula is a good way to visit and explore, the 8km “vereda” is an easy-moderated hike and takes you to the east end of the island where you have a viewpoint, and let me tell you, what a view!

From there you will have a beautiful panorama of the southeast and northeast of Madeira and if the weather permits, you can even see our neighbor island, Porto Santo.

Location: It is located in the municipality of Machico. Here you can find beautiful landscapes and good views to take pictures.

Hike Distance: The total walking distance is 8 kilometers for the round trip route.

Hike Duration: In this walk has a total duration of 5 hours in a round trip.

Difficult: The difficulty of this walk is moderate, due to the fact that there are no stable weather conditions, terrain with some ascents and descents.

Height Difference: The highest point will be at 126 m while the lowest will be at 23 m. Making the difference is approximately 103m for both descending and ascending.

Refreshment Place: You can rest at the end of the course or Ponta do Furado viewpoint.

But if walking is too mainstream for you and you are feeling more adventurous and seeking for some adrenaline why not do coasteering?

Here you’ll have to use different ways to explore the area, walking along the coast, swimming, rappelling, jumping into the sea, using a variety of techniques in order to progress.

Definitely a must do! If you are not very keen of jumps or swimming but still want to have an intense activity and put yourself to the test, climbing is what you are looking for.

The rugged landscape built, over the years, by volcanic rocks offers the perfect conditions for this type of activity. It offers, also, different levels of difficulty, so you don’t need to have any previous experience to add it to your “to do” list.

Let’s not forget that Madeira is not only land, here at the peninsula you have also the crystal-clear waters to explore! Sail along the coast in a kayak while you observe the nature taking its course!

As you go along the way you will find caves that are used by birds to nest and with luck, you might see a newborn peaking is head outside the nest and saying “hello!” to you.

Nature truly is amazing! Another amazing thing is that we have a lot of sea animals living near our coast, so, if you are a sea lover and wishes to observe these amazing cetaceans, like dolphins, whales and with a bit of luck, our native sea lions.

Take a boat trip from the peninsula and go out in the sea, you will not only observe the cetaceans but also you will have breathtaking views of the the island.

While you are out in the see why not go and explore a bit more underwater? Snorkeling is the perfect activity for you to explore a bit deeper the clear waters near Ponta de São Lourenço, the immensity of species of fish that you can find there, is amazing.

Of course, that snorkeling might not be enough for the true adventurers that wishes to really explore the bottom of the ocean, other activity that is also available there is scuba diving, an opportunity to discover more about our existing fauna and also, to take you in an unforgettable experience inside the waters of Madeira.
