The Island of Madeira in the summer months, especially in August, has many festivals and special events, some cultural and others even religious. Do you want to know what will happen in August?

4-6 Madeira Wine Rally (Rali Vinho Madeira)

Between August 4 and 6, the annual Madeira Wine Rally will take place. The rally cars will be on the mountainous routes of the island of Madeira. This great race attracts several European competitors, which attracts many fans to appreciate the speed and experience of the drivers.

11-14 Black Saber Fish Festival (Festa do Peixe Espada Preto)

Caught several hundred meters deep, the black sablefish or “Espada” is one of the most typical specialties of Madeiran cuisine. Between the 11th and 14th in the bay of the town of Câmara de Lobos, visitors to the island will be able to appreciate how exceptional and versatile this fish is. With a wide variety of different “show cooking” workshops and tasting sessions, accompanied by great entertainment.

11-16 Art Camacha

The Art Camacha takes place between the 11th and the 16th and is dedicated to the cultural traditions of this parish, it is organized by the Casa do Povo Camacha, this week-long event combines sports and cultural activities, including wickerwork, embroidery, fashion, music, dance, theater and literature, this festival brings all these things together, creating a unique, vibrant and thoroughly entertaining event.

14-15 Monte Festival (Festa de Nossa Senhora do Monte)

Monte Festival is one of the most important religious festivals on the island. The Church of Nossa Senhora do Monte is fully decorated with flowers in honor of Nossa Senhora do Monte, the patron saint of the city of Funchal. This festival is full of entertainment including music, dancing and stalls serving local food and drinks.

19-23 Caniço Gastronomic Week (Festa Gastronómica do Caniço)

A gastronomic festival held both in Reis Magos in Caniço do Baixo and in the public square of Caniço between the 19th and the 23rd where the popularity of the festival is lasting. Several bars and restaurants attend the event displaying their signature dishes, with the aim of encourage visitors to try something new. Watching the moon shine on the ocean, all accompanied by good music from local bands and traditional dancers.

20-28 Feast of Saint Vincent (Festas do Concelho)

In this small island there are no shortage of religious festivals and holidays! The São Vicente Festival is no exception, it is considered one of the best parties on the island. Every year thousands of people attend the party to see and hear local, national and international bands and artists, dance the night away with local DJs and enjoy

21 Funchal City Day (Dia da Cidade do Funchal)

Dia da Cidade do Funchal commemorates the anniversary of the Royal Certificate signed by King D. Manuel I in 1508, which officially recognizes Funchal as a city. Historically an important seaport for trade, Funchal was the first European city built on the Atlantic. Official ceremonies include a mass at the Colégio Church and an assembly at the Town Hall, as well as many local events and festivities.

25 – 11 Madeira Wine Festival (Festa do Vinho Madeira)

The Madeira Wine Festival which takes place in August and September, is associated with the age-old precepts of viticultural work. The festival begins in the town of Câmara de Lobos with the grape harvest itself, the harvesters’ parade, the treading of the grapes and other related traditions enjoyed by both locals and visitors.

In Funchal On Avenida Arriaga, in addition to the usual performance of the Folklore Groups, there is always a very diverse musical program that includes various types of music such a jazz, traditional, philharmonic, among others and many stalls serve food and beverage specialties typical of Madeira.

28- 30 European Folklore Week (Semana Europeia de Folclore)

Although Madeiran folklore is unique and although it is the national dance of a small country, its vivacity and soul have managed to captivate many across Europe as local, national and European groups come together to celebrate six hundred years of culture, dance and music. in a very lively and entertaining week performing in the heart of Funchal at the Municipal Gardens Auditorium.
