Madeira Helicopter Rescue Fees for Tourists

Starting January 14, 2025, the Madeira Regional Civil Protection Service (SRPC) has implemented a new policy, referred to as Madeira Helicopter Rescue Fees, requiring non-resident tourists to cover helicopter rescue costs under specific circumstances.

When Are Tourists Charged?

Tourists will be required to pay helicopter rescue fees if they:

  • Hike on unofficial or closed trails, necessitating a rescue from restricted or unsafe areas.

Exemption for Residents: Madeira residents are exempt from these fees, provided they present their “Resident Card” issued through the Simplifica Platform.

What Are the Costs?

The helicopter rescue costs include:

  • Helicopter Activation: €753.25
  • Rescue Specialists: €105 per rescuer (usually two rescuers are involved, totaling €210)
  • Flight Time: €7.50 per minute

For example, a 30-minute rescue operation would cost approximately €1,188.25 (excluding VAT)

Why Was This Policy Introduced?

Madeira Helicopter Rescue Fees aims to address the rising number of rescues involving tourists who venture into unauthorized or hazardous areas, often ignoring local safety regulations. The SRPC’s goals include:

  • Discouraging risky behavior and promoting compliance with official guidelines.
  • Encouraging safer practices among adventure tourists.
  • Reducing the financial strain on local resources caused by preventable rescue operations.

What Does This Mean for Visitors?

This policy emphasizes the importance of careful planning and adherence to Madeira’s official guidelines for hiking and outdoor activities. Visitors should:

  • Stick to Official Trails: Choose designated hiking routes and check for updates on closures or restrictions.
  • Be Prepared: Equip yourself with appropriate gear and understand the difficulty level of chosen trails.
  • Follow Local Rules: Respect local regulations to ensure your safety and avoid unexpected expenses.

Promoting Sustainable Tourism

By implementing Madeira Helicopter Rescue Fees, Madeira seeks to balance its growing reputation as a premier adventure destination with the need to preserve natural resources and maintain emergency services. Visitors are encouraged to explore the island responsibly, ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience for all.
